The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has officially released the updated version of IS 7098 (Part 1) in June 2025, replacing the long-standing IS 7098 (Part 1):1988. This revision brings significant changes for PVC, PE, and LSHF insulated power cables, aligning the Indian standard more closely with global safety and performance benchmarks.

- New Cable Categories Introduced
The revised standard introduces three main categories:
C1, C2, and the new C3 (LSHF) type cables.
The addition of C3 – Low Smoke Halogen Free (LSHF) reflects the growing demand for safer, low-emission materials in public and industrial installations. - Updated Sheathing Material Requirements
The new version includes stricter testing for outer sheathing compounds used in PVC, Polyethylene (PE), and Low Smoke Halogen Free (LSHF) cables to ensure enhanced flame resistance and durability.
🧪 Newly Introduced and Revised Tests
To remain BIS compliant under IS 7098:2025, manufacturers and testing laboratories must now perform the following additional tests:
- Oxygen Index / Temperature Index – To assess flame retardancy of cable materials.
- Flame Retardant Test (4-Meter Vertical Chamber) – Evaluates flame propagation behavior.
- Smoke Density Test – Determines smoke generation under fire conditions.
- And several other performance and material verification tests.
These updated requirements are aimed at improving fire safety, smoke control, and environmental performance of power cables used in both domestic and industrial applications.

Testing laboratories accredited for IS 7098 should review their existing testing infrastructure to ensure it meets the new 2025 requirements. Instruments and setups used for the 1988 version may need upgrades or additional testing systems to comply with the latest BIS protocols.
